Hello! Julia Capallo here, creator of A Marvelous Spark. As an artist and educator, I seek to find a balance between making my own artwork and using art processes as a learning tool for my students.
I began teaching art in the Fall of 2011. I received my Bachelor of Science degree at Towson University in Graphic Design, and my Master of Arts in Teaching at the Maryland Institute College of Art. I taught elementary (K-5) art for eight years, I took a year-long maternity leave for the 2019-2020 school year, and I am currently working from my basement teaching middle school art.
Teaching philosophy: I believe that some of the most important aspects of art education are to understand, learn from, and reflect upon artistic processes. Students should be able to use art as a vehicle to express their ideas, explore various art media, and collaborate with others. My goal is for students to develop “artistic behaviors” including art appreciation, critical and creative thinking skills, and the ability to learn from their experiences. These habits of mind can be transferred into different aspects of their lives.
I am passionate about teaching, learning, and continuing to grow as an artist and educator. My hobbies and interests include creating my own art and jewelry, writing, practicing yoga, going to concerts, reading, and traveling.
